It is very important that your child learns the multiplication facts.
Multiplication facts are a critical part of math curriculum. While conceptual understanding and deep meaning are essential, it is also important for students to know their multiplication facts with fluency. Multiplication facts should be effortless and automatic for students, so their focus and mental resources can be geared toward more complex problem solving and upper level math concepts, rather than basic computation. Knowing the facts well facilitates the learning of multiplication, basic division facts, division, fractions, finding area, and, later on, multi-digit multiplication, long division, and factoring. If multiplication facts are not memorized, a great deal of time is necessary to calculate correct answers in all of these areas. Fourth grade math and beyond will be extremely difficult for students who do not know their multiplication facts. The brain is like a computer. It enables us to memorize all those important details we need to remember. So teaching your brain to memorize is important. Whatever you put into it, will most probably remain there for a long time. You can fill it with skills that can be a benefit to you your entire life...like multiplication! You will use it for as long as you live. Therefore, knowing the significant value of learning and memorizing the multiplication facts, it is necessary for students to practice at home to truly solidify learning them. So, please have your child practice and memorize the facts using flash cards with you at home. Your child should be able to give the products quickly, without using fingers. This will most definitely be time well spent! |
